I finished this morning and what a mind trip of a story. This is my first by Olivia Evans, but I plan to check her other stories out. This is definitely not your normal romance. If you are looking for romance in the terms of sex, you won’t find it. However, if you are looking for the romance that stems from the marrow and seeps into every facet of life, then this is for you.
This emotional read will take you on a wild ride of Dylan and Presley’s life. You won’t believe the twists and turns that their fragile love takes as it flutters into an epic love of all time. Honestly when I first started this story, it took me a while to want to read it. Not because it was bad, actually it was more because I knew it would pull at you. I wasn’t quite in the right frame of mind for this story at the beginning and I knew I needed to be. Once I got out of my own head with personal things, I could really sink down in my reading chair and devour the book.
There were many characters in this story to keep track of and follow along. All of them playing a role in Dylan and Presley’s lives. Having the background I do, some of the medical situations might have seemed unrealistic to some, but believe it or not, there is a strong possibility that they all could have happened in real life. People might be surprised by it, but I wasn’t. I think how Olivia handled all of that was top-notch. It made me feel like even if I had no clue about meds, doctor/patient privileges, and practicing I could understand it. Some may not like the ending or want an epilogue, but I found the HFN ending on pointe. Anything more would have seemed way to cliché for this tale. Also in my mind it leaves it open for Olivia to write a Christmas Novella (cough*cough* Olivia😉) and we can catch up with them again. My only sticking point is I had some genuine questions about his parents, even a paragraph might have helped me understand but they were nonexistent and I didn’t catch why. Overall I really enjoyed this story. It was very different and unique which to me is awesome! I like the stories that stand out.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Dylan and Presley grew up together. When they finally move from childhood friends into high school sweethearts, they never expected what they would have to endure. Olivia captured a very realistic quality in the emotions Presley went through at 18 and in high school. It’s not easy to capture that level of turmoil and suspense.
Six years pass and Dylan is trying to move on with his life. When the past literally knocks him on his rear, he has to decide what he will do to overcome all odds and restore the love that has lasted inside him.
I liked how the author made the time flow and sent us in the past to relive HS moments as well. It wasn’t awkward and fit well in the story. I never felt lost while reading.
Grandmother played a pivotal role in Dylan’s life. I also think she had a strong influence with Presley. I would have loved to had more of her interaction with them at the end. I also would have loved more about his parents.
Cody was a wild card. He added a depth to Hilltop and Dylan’s life that I wasn’t expecting. This kid very easily could have stolen the show in my opinion.
Overall if you are looking for a story that will make you feel, think and have a love that is deep in your soul, then I recommend this book. It is poignant and moving. Definitely a top read of 2017 for me.
