This is a new author for me. It is an interesting fantasy/paranormal read. Micah Minnefer has created a fascinating world. If you like a unique fantasy world, then check out this novella. Since this is a novella, this review will probably be on the short side.

In the land of Wabaton, we meet Anuaka, and the people she calls family. Three are by blood while two are by choice. This story reminds me of some of a choose your own adventure because each step Anuaka takes is a choice. It leads to dramatic and unexpected outcomes.

While reading, I did feel like I was missing something with Anuaka and her past. I actually didn’t get it answered until the sneak peek at The Core, prequel, in the back of the book. Horus, Audritti, and Nebu are her blood family. Each has a different impact on Anuaka. Horus takes on the patriarch role and while he means well, causes extreme tension. You could feel the volatility with the two of them. It explodes and they aren’t the only two caught in the crossfire.

Audritti falls in the matriarch role and I feel it helps keep Horus and Anuaka from coming to blows. Until she can’t anymore. I felt like all she wanted was to heal Anuaka. Nebu, the poor baby of the family, is left out of a lot. What he doesn’t miss out on are the tension and ultimatums.

Anuaka is trying to save her family it is causing stress and pain to them both. There is also a river dividing them in which road to follow. We don’t know which road Anuaka will take, but this leads us to the start of an interesting journey for her.

Tanzo is the big bad in this story. he says he’s looking out for Anuaka but is he really? Secrets come to light at the end that leaves Anuaka reeling. Miko and Natality are the family she’s made. Reading, I didn’t like or trust either one of them. They seemed to me to make Anuaka an agenda, not a family friend.

This story to me is an intro into the world Micah created. The main plot centering this story carries over and is not resolved, which is fine for this novella.

Overall the last 1/4th of the book flew by. It was fast paced and action packed. The beginning, I had a hard time getting into and following along in the story. That said the ending and the prequel sucked me in more. I think this series has a lot of potential and is why it’s a 4 point shoe read for me.
