I received a request to check out this novel by debut author L Michele D. It has some romantic aspects but in my opinion is an urban fantasy drama novel. This story takes place in Chicago, specifically the West Side.
There is a lot for me to cover so I’m going to get right to it. First I thought the plot was good. It had a lot of passion and soul in it. I will say that I was able to guess the bad person fairly early on, but I blame that on my addiction to mystery and drama novels. The characters had a lot of personality and tenacity for standing strong with a united front for their family. They didn’t give in under pressure and rose to defeat what threatened to tear them apart.
I will note the formatting for the book on my paperwhite was a bit off. Mainly that sentences carried over to the next line with large spaces in between and chapters started right after another. I’ve been told by an author friend that formatting can be a biotch for kindle, so I can only imagine what it takes. I bring this up because I know it can detract some people and can be annoying.
Lastly I want to mention that some of my followers who check it out might have difficulty with the slang. The author kept this story true when the characters speak. Hailing from a different area in the US, I even had some trouble with some of the words. While they speak in slang, the authors writing during internal dialogue and narration is very easy to follow and understand.
I will give a warning if you have issues with drug use in stories, then this isn’t for you. While it’s not excessive, it’s there and I know some people don’t like it so wanted to put in that clause. Overall, if you are looking for something different to read with a good plot give this story a go.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Unique is a girl who has gone to college and is trying to work towards a future that involves her family, girlfriends, and leaving memories of the streets behind. You can’t always escape your past, and sometimes it comes back to haunt you. When Unique and her friends find themselves in a situation, they realize that all that matters is family.
The secondary characters played pivotal roles in this story. They each had a part in helping Unique rise above. Anika, Lynette, & Kim were best friends you could relate to.
I guessed who was behind it fairly early on, but there were lots of surprises along this story. It had soul, passion, pain, and strength in unity. The bond they have shows that no matter what obstacles arise, the family will overcome. They will rise above and survive.
The plot in this story will keep you reading along. I do wish I had more about the ending with Kim and Knuckles, I wanted to know how she knew. Of course that might be for a continuation of another time, but it kept me guessing.
